Building Connections: Route 22 Pedestrian Bicycle Bridge Takes Shape
This summer marks a major milestone in Indiana County’s trail vision: the Route 22 Pedestrian‑Bicycle Bridge in Burrell Township is rising over busy US‑22 just west of Route 119, closing a crucial 4‑mile gap in the Hoodlebug‑Ghost Town trail network.
“Improving safety has been the number‑one driving force behind the Route 22 Bridge Project,” explains County trail planners, affirming that no safe non‑motorized crossing currently exists on this stretch.
The project’s long-awaited contract was awarded in September 2024 to Charles J. Merlo, Inc., at an estimated cost of $4.7 million, supported by state, federal, and local grants. Construction began in early this year, with PennDOT reporting anticipated completion by mid‑2026.
“We’re very conscious of it being a gateway for the southern portion of the county,” says Laurie Lafontaine, chair of the Indiana County Planning Commission.
Echoing her vision, Jeff Raykes, Managing Principal, Stuart Group Consulting, adds: “By putting a trail over a major highway, we’re identifying ourselves as a recreational destination, and we’re happy saying that.”
Once completed, the bridge will seamlessly link trail users between Indiana and Blairsville, boosting tourism, enhancing public recreation, and supporting the county economy by drawing trail users to local businesses and lodging.
As construction progresses, the bridge stands as a symbol of connection—uniting communities, promoting safety, and advancing Indiana County’s identity as a trail‑friendly destination. Stay tuned for ribbon‑cutting details next summer!
