Downtown Indiana: Summer Vibrancy & Third Thursdays Boost Business and Community Spirit

Downtown Indiana is buzzing with renewed energy this summer, thanks in large part to the continued success of the Third Thursday’s series and other warm-weather events that are drawing record foot traffic, increasing local spending, and reinforcing Indiana Borough as the cultural and commercial heart of the county.

Organized by Downtown Indiana, Third Thursday’s transform the core business district in IRMC Park into a lively pedestrian experience on the third Thursday of each month. IRMC Park is lined with pop-up vendors, artists, musicians, food trucks, merchants offering extended retail hours. Since its relaunch in 2023, the program has grown steadily—and in summer 2025, attendance is up more than 40% over last year, according to organizers.

“We’ve seen a measurable increase in foot traffic, downtown sales, and community participation,” said Sam Kenly, Executive Director of Downtown Indiana. “People are coming out to experience what makes Indiana special—our local businesses, our creativity, and our community pride.”

Local businesses agree. Retailers and restaurants report stronger Thursday evening sales during the events, with some shops extending hours permanently to capture evening crowds.

“Third Thursdays have completely changed our summer rhythm,” said Brian Jones, co-owner of the Artist’s Hand Gallery & Espresso Bar. “It’s not just about sales—it’s about building relationships with new customers and giving people a reason to keep coming downtown.”

In addition to the Third Thursday series, Indiana Borough hosted sidewalk sales, live music nights, and outdoor movie screenings in partnership with community groups and IUP. These events are part of a broader push to position Downtown Indiana as a vibrant, walkable destination for residents, students, and visitors.

Downtown Indiana, in partnership with Indiana County Center for Economic Operations (CEO), continues to leverage grant funding to enhance placemaking elements—like new signage, planters, lighting, and marketing for events. These investments have helped transform the downtown into a more welcoming and dynamic space.

The economic impact is already noticeable. A recent Downtown Indiana Inc. survey found:

  • 76% of participating businesses saw increased foot traffic on event nights
  • Over 60% reported higher-than-average daily revenue on Third Thursdays
  • More than 1,000 visitors attended each event night this June and July, many from surrounding counties

Photos from recent events show bustling sidewalks, full patios, live performances, and families enjoying the atmosphere, a vivid sign of downtown resurgence.

“We’ve worked hard to make Downtown Indiana a destination again,” said Kenly. “And what’s happening here is just the beginning.”

Just completed was the First Commonwealth Bank Taste & Tour, soon to follow is the Italian Festival as well as the weekly Farmers Markets, expanded holiday events, and new collaborations with IUP and local artists.
