Homer City Power Plant to Transform into $10B+ AI Energy Hub

A significant transformation is underway in Indiana County. Homer City Redevelopment (HCR) and Kiewit Power Constructors Co. have announced the redevelopment of the former Homer City coal-fired power plant into a 3,200-acre natural gas-powered data center campus—one of the most significant such projects in U.S. history.

The Homer City Energy Campus is an ambitious redevelopment project that will transform the former Homer City Generating Station in Indiana County into a state-of-the-art natural gas-powered data center campus. This initiative addresses the escalating energy demands of artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) technologies.

The site, once Pennsylvania’s largest coal plant, will now support the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure. The project will generate up to 4.5 gigawatts of cleaner energy, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by up to 65% per megawatt hour compared to its coal-burning predecessor.

Key Highlights:

  • $10B+ capital investment, with billions more expected in data center development
  • 10,000+ construction jobs and 1,000 permanent high-paying tech and energy roles
  • Powered by seven advanced, hydrogen-enabled turbines from GE Vernova
  • Construction starts this year; power generation expected in 2027

Notably, the project repurposes critical infrastructure already in place—from transmission lines to substations—speeding up delivery and reducing costs. Natural gas will be sourced from the Marcellus Shale, helping to address looming energy shortages in the Mid-Atlantic region.

“We’re honoring the past while building for the future,” said HCR President & CEO William Wexler. “This campus will bring unprecedented economic opportunity to Indiana County and the broader region.”
