Indiana County Manufacturing Day
Manufacturing Day – Inspiring the Future Workforce
On Friday, October 3rd, Indiana County will once again join the nationwide celebration of Manufacturing Day, an event that highlights the innovation, technology, and career opportunities driving today’s manufacturing industry. Since its local launch in 2018, Manufacturing Day has grown into a signature workforce initiative for the region, offering students and community members a firsthand look at the vital role manufacturing plays in the economy.
This year, manufacturers across the county will open their doors to students from all eleven school districts, providing tours, demonstrations, and immersive experiences that showcase modern production. By engaging directly with employers, students gain valuable insight into the skills and training needed to succeed in today’s high-tech, team-based manufacturing environment.
Miller Fabrication Solutions is proud to once again participate by hosting free plant tours at both its Homer City and Brookville facilities on October 3rd. To learn more or register, call 814-849-3061. Also opening its doors is the IUP STEAMSHOP, located at 630 S. 13th Street, Indiana in the former Robertshaw Building on the IUP campus. For details, call 724-541-2927. A new highlight this year is a tour of the Urban Outfitters Distribution Center at 501 Windy Ridge Road, Indiana at the Windy Ridge Business & Technology Park. The event is coordinated by the Indiana County Center for Economic Operations (CEO) in partnership with the Indiana County Manufacturing Consortium, Indiana County Technology Center, Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), the Indiana Gazette, Renda Media and the Tri-County Workforce Investment Board. Together, these organizations are working to inspire the next generation while supporting local employers who face critical workforce shortages.
Manufacturing remains a cornerstone of Indiana County’s economy, with local companies producing precision parts, energy components, advanced materials, and specialty products for regional and national markets. Yet employers continue to grapple with workforce gaps and outdated perceptions of manufacturing as low-skill or unsafe. Manufacturing Day directly challenges these stereotypes, showing students, educators, and the public that today’s industry is cutting-edge, innovative, and full of opportunity.

Community leaders stress that the event’s impact goes beyond a single day. By highlighting pathways from high school training programs to college degrees, apprenticeships, and full-timeemployment, Indiana County is strengthening its ability to retain homegrown talent and build a sustainable workforce. With an estimated 3.5 million manufacturing jobs expected to open nationwide over the next decade, Manufacturing Day positions Indiana County to help meet the demand with a well-prepared, locally rooted workforce.
Representative Jim Struzzi said, “We have a solid manufacturing base here in Indiana County that has the opportunity to grow even more robust soon. These industries that provide family sustaining jobs and careers must be supported and encouraged. Manufacturing Day is a great way to recognize the potential we have right here at home.” As Senator Joe Pittman noted at last year’s program, “Manufacturing is part of our DNA in Indiana County, and events like this show how we are preparing for the future. It’s about keeping our young people here, giving them opportunities, and strengthening the backbone of our local economy. On October 3rd, Indiana County’s students, teachers, and employers will come together once again to celebrate an industry that remains essential to the county’s future.
