INDIANA mSA’S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE AT 4.5% IN JANUARY 2026

Indiana County’s economy continues to demonstrate resilience and forward momentum, balancing short-term seasonal workforce shifts with a strong foundation for long-term growth.

Recent data from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry shows the county’s unemployment rate at 5.2% in January 2026, reflecting typical post-holiday adjustments. The local labor force remains steady at approximately 35,600, with 33,700 residents employed.

More importantly, the broader trend tells a stronger story. Indiana County’s unemployment rate has improved from 5.6% one year ago, and total employment has increased by approximately 600 jobs year-over-year—clear indicators of a stabilizing and strengthening economy.

“While seasonal fluctuations are expected, the long-term trajectory for Indiana County is clearly positive,” said Senator Pittman. “Our region is building on a strong foundation, supported by strategic investments and a collaborative approach to economic development.”

That future is being defined by transformational investment. The redevelopment of the Homer City Generating Station site represents one of the most significant economic opportunities in Pennsylvania. Planned as a next-generation energy and data campus, the project is expected to generate thousands of construction jobs and create a new base of permanent employment while positioning Indiana County as a hub for energy innovation and advanced technology.

“Indiana County is not just maintaining its economy—we are actively building for the future,” said Representative Jim Struzzi. “From workforce development to major redevelopment projects, we are creating the conditions for sustained growth and new opportunity.”
