Keep On Walkin’!

“The Indiana County WalkWorks Decathlon Program is in the midst of their 8th year of programmed events.  The Decathlon began on February 3rd with the Hot Chocolate Walk hosted at Blue Spruce Park.  This year’s kick-off event had 108 attendees that were treated to hot chocolate (of course) and coffee as well as other refreshments provided by volunteers and other donors including McDonald’s of Indiana, Aroma Joe’s of Indiana, Martin’s Grocery Store, the Salvation Army, and the Indiana County Tourist Bureau.  Also, participants were given the option of a walk along the newly improved Chickadee Path with a chance to feed birds out of their hands or an interpretive walk circling the park.

The Decathlon has continued with events throughout March including the Eagle Watch at Loyalhanna Dam in partnership with the Friends of the Parks, a historical and interpretive walk through Cherry Tree Borough for which a self-guided tour was also produced, and a walk along the WalkWorks Route in Glen Campbell Borough.  Events will continue throughout April and May, culminating back at Blue Spruce Park with a tabling and raffle prize drawing at the Children’s Advisory Council’s Naturepalooza event on June 1st.   One prize per participant, but each Decathlon event attended earns participants an additional chance at winning a prize.

The Indiana County Decathlon is an annual program held with the intent to encourage physical outdoor activity during the winter and spring while getting to learn about natural, recreational, historical, and cultural places, resources, and activities throughout the County. This program is coordinated by an advisory group of dedicated volunteers in cooperation with Pennsylvania WalkWorks program, the YMCA of Indiana County, Indiana County Parks & Trails, Aging Services, the Indiana County Office of Planning & Development and the Indiana County Active Transportation Advisory Committee (ICATAC).
