New Welcome Center Announced
In February 2024, First Commonwealth Bank announced the donation of its historic Downtown Indiana Office (DIO) branch building, located at 600 Philadelphia Street, to Indiana County. This strategic move aims to transform the landmark into a county-focused Welcome Center, fostering community engagement and collaboration.
The Welcome Center is set to become the shared home of the Indiana County Tourist Bureau, the Indiana County Chamber of Commerce, and Downtown Indiana, a Non-Profit Organization. This co-location is designed to enhance synergy among these entities, promoting business development and tourism within the county. Leaders from each organization have expressed enthusiasm for the move, highlighting the potential for increased collaboration and delivery of services to area businesses and visitors.
To ensure uninterrupted banking services, First Commonwealth Bank relocated its branch operations, including the ATM and night depository, to a newly constructed facility within its existing 654 Philadelphia Street building, just up the street of the donated location. The new branch, which opened in late September 2024, offers a modern banking experience for customers. The transition was carefully planned to avoid any impact on employees’ jobs or customer service.
The Indiana County Commissioners have expressed appreciation for First Commonwealth Bank’s generous donation, recognizing the significant role the new Welcome Center will play in enhancing business services and promoting tourism. A Payment In Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) agreement will be established to ensure that local taxpayers are not adversely affected by the property’s transition.
The proposed improvements to the 600 Philadelphia Street building include a new roof with added insulation, new HVAC equipment to serve the main floor area of the Welcome Center, development of a new Conference Room behind the Teller Line, that keeps with the classically ornamented interior, and updated rest room facilities. The construction work will be covered by a Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant announced by Senator Joe Pittman and Representative Jim Struzzi in early November. The occupancy of the new Welcome Center will be in mid-2025.
This initiative exemplifies a successful public-private partnership, leveraging community assets to drive economic growth and enrich the cultural fabric of Indiana County. The new Welcome Center is poised to become a central hub for residents and visitors alike, reflecting the collaborative spirit of the community.
